Derby Days 2022 Recap
The Huntsman Cancer Institute
In 2012, the Sigma Chi Fraternity named the Huntsman Cancer Institute, located in Salt Lake City, as the main benefactor of all undergraduate philanthropic efforts worldwide.
Founded in 1995 thanks to a 100 Million Dollar donation from the Order of Constantine Member and Significant Sig Jon Huntsman Sr, the Huntsman Cancer Institute is the only world-class comprehensive cancer care center located in the intermountain west of the United States.
The core mission of the HCI is to understand cancer from its beginning, to use that knowledge in the creation and improvement of cancer treatments, to relieve the suffering of cancer patients, and provide education about cancer risk, prevention, and care.
On June 15, 2015, Sigma Chi made the largest commitment by a men’s fraternity, with an $11 million pledge to HCI. In February 2020, Sigma Chi fulfilled that pledge. To continue our commitment with the HCI in fighting such a worthy cause, in June 2019, Sigma Chi pledged an additional $20 million to be used for women's cancer screening, treatment, and research.
Derby Days is our main philanthropic event as seen in the highlighted video above that engages our student body through competitions, benefit nights, and overall camaraderie in order to help us achieve our goal of donating as many funds as possible to the HCI.
This year our Zeta Eta Chapter was able to accomplish a historic milestone for all Sigma Chi chapters nationwide in donating 20,000 dollars during the 2021-2022 academic year thanks to so many generous contributions from students, faculty and alumni alike.
